About Me

I have been teaching and researching at UCD since 1992 and was appointed Professor of Architecture in 2008. My research interests are quite diverse but revolve around questions of space, consciousness and identity. My PhD research looked at the politics of urban development in Dublin, while more recently I have been interested in looking at issues of identity and language in modern and contemporary Irish architecture. At the same time, I have been writing and researching on the connections between consciousness and architecture. I have also had a growing interest in photography, specifically how space and the self are framed through photographs. I have been compiling a series of essays and conference papers on the subject which I aim to publish as a book in the not too distant future. Meanwhile, I am also acting as joint editor of the Architecture volume of a 5 volume project from the Royal Irish Academy - The Art and Architecture of Ireland - to be published in 2014.
